If you look at the original poll, it is clear that we have come to a crossroads. The vote is split and 50% of the league will end up unhappy regardless of what happens there.
So I thought to myself, why not think outside the box a wee bit. And now I propose to you, managers of the IIHA, a simple compromise.
During each offseason I am able to update player ratings using a single file; a player database if you will. Every summer a few people come up with new databases, with attributes based on NHL performance.
In the sim leagues, the player attribute database updates daily based upon performance in the sim. This is also exported in a single file by the sim, and that is what is uploaded onto the site.
It would be very simple for me, during each offseason, to combine the current sim-based file with the NHL one. This new database could be formed by averaging attributes between the two, or they could be weighed separately, depending on preference.
Throughout the season players will still improve or decline based on performance within the sim, and these changes will still be reflected in following seasons. They will not be continuous however, as the NHL ratings, based on the actual player's NHL performance, would intervene once every two seasons to award those players who have succeeded at that level, and penalize those who have not. These past sim improvements will not be thrown out the window, only they will be modified.
Thus a manager may develop his players at a quicker pace, and their positive NHL performance will reward the manager even more, as he has scouted and drafted a player who is, well, actually good.
This way you have a better idea of who to focus development on, as you have a reference for whether or not said development is worth your time.
Know that I am more than confident that this can and will work.
Does this sound plausible? I personally think its a good idea, as it brings together a true sim atmosphere with the excitement of a blooming player in real life. I hope you all agree.
----
A simple example:
Sidney Crosby has a checking rating of 71 in the sim at the moment. Let's say through normal sim growth it is 76 by the end of this season, and thus summer 2010. The summer 2010 NHL rerates list Crosby's CK at 70.
Thus, Crosby will go into season two with a CK rating of 73 (76+70/2), and he will progress as anyone would in a sim league until the end of season three, where the average would be calculated again with the summer 2011 NHL ratings.
This would be done with every player and every rating, of course. Not as difficult as one would think.
