Waiving A Player
You may send a player down to the minors if he is 26 years old or UNDER. (All your RFAs may be sent down to your farm team.)
For players over 26 years of age, they can play a maximum of 10 total professional games per season to remain exempt from waivers. Thus if a player of 27 plays 11 pro games and you want to move him to the farm, he is required to pass through waivers.
If a player is 27 years old or OVER, he will be placed on waivers for 48 hours where any other team in the league may claim him.
If a player is claimed off waivers, the claiming organization will take on HALF the player's salary, and must pay the team waiving the player $500,000 in compensation.
If a player clears waivers, he becomes a member of your farm team. He may be called up to the pros at any time, however he'll need to clear re-entry waivers.
Buying Out A Player
Since there is a salary cap on the farm team of $3 million dollars, a GM may be forced to buy out a player's contract if he is unable to find a suitable trade partner.
The rules for the buy out are as follows:
25% of players salary with 1 year remaining on contract.
35% of players salary with 2 years remaining on contract.
45% of players salary with 3 years remaining on contract.
55% of players salary with 4 years remaining on contract.
65% of players salary with 5 years remaining on contract.
75% of players salary with 6 years remaining on contract.
Example. Wade Redden makes $8 million over the next 3 years. I want to buy him out. (8 x .45 = 3.6). Therefore, I would have to pay $3.6 million.
The money for the buy out comes directly out of the GM's cash pool.
You may also buy out a player if you simply do not want him on your team anymore.
The player being bought out will immediately become a free agent.
